The Project:

"Mesh To Voxel VFX" utilizes Unreal Engine to transform any 3D mesh into a dynamic particle system, driven by boid rules to simulate fluid-like behaviors. Developed initially for a music video concept, this project highlights my skills in mesh manipulation and VFX innovation, merging artistic vision with technical execution.

  • In the fall of 2022, I spearheaded the "UE5 Mesh To Voxel VFX" system, designed to innovate visual effects by transforming any mesh into a dynamic canvas of volumetric particles. My role as Technical Designer involved mastering Unreal Engine's complex mesh base code and cinematic systems, enabling the precise placement of VFX elements via a novel point-in-polygon algorithm. By opting for a CPU-driven approach initially, I streamlined the development process, minimizing shader debugging and enhancing adaptability to real-time artistic feedback. The project culminated in a video demo that showcased our technical prowess and my ability to enhance visual storytelling through skilled cinematic camera manipulation.

The Inspiration:

The concept for the "UE5 Mesh To Voxel VFX" emerged during my collaboration with Jared Raab on a potential music video project for July Talk, inspired by the artistic technique of Unreal Engine 3D pointillism seen in Andy Shauf's "Clove Cigarette" video. This inspiration led to the goal of creating VFX that mimicked the fluidity of pointillism but were governed by boid behavior rather than traditional fluid dynamics. The blend of technology and artistry in this project highlights my capability to translate creative visions into technical realities, demonstrating my innovative approach and readiness to contribute to groundbreaking work in the game development and VFX industry.
