Caleb Barynin
Technical Designer
I have always been interested in developing games. I am deeply compelled by this interdisciplinary medium. And I plan to take my time to understand how we make games in the industry setting. As a 25 year-old with a computer science degree and an arts background I now feel like I’ve got the depth and versatility to help you and your team with whatever technical needs your digital product requires.
The roles of a videogame technical designer are critical to any videogame production. A technical designer can advocate for the valid translation of an artistic idea to a realistic and affordable series of tasks for the development team. They are both attuned to the intricate nature of the intended experience while also understanding how to optimize the feature development timeline. A technical designer’s is defined by their background, which contains a depth of experience with designer tools, methodologies and a thorough understanding of artistic expression.
My background is this complex. I went to an arts high school where I studied theatre. I was a master carpenter for several shows with 30+ crew, a director on 5+ projects, an actor on 20+ projects, while also running science and math club, and starting a robotics club. I started university believing I would be okay with a purely technical career as an engineer but switched to majoring in computer science with a minor in English; I learned I needed the balance of artistic and technical expression. I now understand how to write good c++/c# code but I can also design in the adobe suite, blender, or build worlds in Unity and Unreal. I’ve got 15 years of piano experience and I bring my MIDI keyboard everywhere. Ultimately my career goal is to facilitate effective communication between all disciplines by deeply understanding my peers.
As a technical designers I believe I add significant value to developing:
Tools for designers
Code driven simulations and VFX
Prototypes/Proof-of-concepts
Accurate and affordable solutions to ambiguous problems
